Bead Weaving: More Beginner Stitches | 2-hour class | $40

Peyote stitch gets top billing and is the foundation for many, many bead weaving patterns.  But it is by no means the only well-known stitch or even the easiest.  We're happy to teach you any of the following basic stitches.

We don't have these on our calendar but can schedule a class based on your availability.  Class size is limited to 4, so feel free to invite 3 of your friends!

Keep scrolling to see details of available stitches.
Instruction: Students get instruction on the stitch they have chosen, how to start, how to add more thread, and how to follow a pattern for that stitch. Students do not usually complete a project but will have a good start and will leave with information about finishing at home.

All classes include written instructions for the basic stitch as well as variations.

Instructor: Kim Humphrey
Materials: Bead In Hand carries all of the materials recommended for these projects and can help you with your bead selections. See individual descriptions for details.
Please note our Class Policy: Pre-registration with payment of class fee is required.  Class fees are non-refundable and non-transferable to other  classes.   Unless otherwise specified, classes are designed for adults ages 16 and up.

Contact us to schedule a class.  Please include the stitch you are interested in and two or three dates that you are available.  These classes can be taught on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

Descriptions

Brick Stitch
This stitch is found in Native American traditions, notably Comanche and Cheyenne, as well as African Zulu tribes.  It creates off-set rows with the beads arranged in a brick-like pattern.  It creates the same look as peyote, but is stitched very differently.

Brick Stitch Supplies
The class fee includes a small “learning amount” of size 8/0 seed beads in one color, a beading needle and a starting length of beading thread. Students will need to purchase additional materials in order to complete an entire project at home.

Herringbone (or Ndebele pronounced en-de-belly)
This stitch originated in South Africa and is the traditional stitch for the Ndebele tribe.  Also called herringbone stitch because of the angled pattern it creates.  It is a very flexible stitch and can be worked in flat even count, flat odd count, tubular ropes and twisted or flat ribbon ropes.

Right Angle Weave
The origin is unknown for this beading technique but it is found in beaded pieces from Africa, Europe, Russia and Asia.  It creates a very open weave, similar to a netting stitch, by going in a figure 8 pattern.  It is often embellished with additional beads or crystals and can also be worked in tubular and dimensional patterns.

The class fee includes a small “learning amount” of size 11/0 seed beads in one color, a beading needle and a starting length of beading thread. Students will need to purchase additional materials in order to complete an entire project at home.

Square Stitch
Square stitch is a very tight stitch that gives the same appearance as beadwork created on a loom.  The rows sit parallel, and it works well for geometric designs.  The stitch uses a lot of thread, which passes through each bead many times, and therefore creates a very strong piece.

Spiral Rope
The basic spiral rope is a simple and classic stitch.  It can be worked with any size seed bead and offers oodles of variations that can have stunning results.
Spiral Rope Supplies |
Supplies can be purchased prior to the class date or just before the start of the class.
  • Students need two colors of size 11/0 seed beads, beading needle and thread.

Flat Spiral Bracelet
This is another classic stitch. The pattern looks complicated but is really quite simple, and like the basic spiral rope, can be worked with many different variations.
Flat Spiral Supplies |
Supplies can be purchased prior to the class date or just before the start of the class.
  • 25 to 35 6mm round or fire polished beads

Simple Netted Necklace
Great for beginners, netting is simpler and faster than it appears.
Simple Netted Supplies |

  • Button or clasp
